This past weekend, as I was preparing to go to a car show, I broke something in the Corvair's throttle linkage. I haven't had a chance to get it up on ramps to look at it until today, and when I jack it up, this is what happens:
I should probably have moved the ramp for the picture, but the rear wheel is at this point about 6" off the ground, and the front wheel is only slightly lower, maybe 5" off the ground.
"Chassis flex? What's that?" - The Corvair, in what I like to imagine is a Christopher Walken voice.
The good news is that the problem is readily apparent, the linkage is just hanging there. The problem is that until it broke, I never had a reason to look at it, so I have no idea how it's supposed to look. The other problem is that I think the linkage was bolted to the tranny, and the bolt holding it appears to have sheared. I have no evidence to back that up, but everything is dirty underneath (Corvairs are famous for getting oil EVERYWHERE when there's a leak, which there is, see above photo) except that one sheared bolt next to the linkage.
I'm going to do some Googling, hopefully I'll find something out.
On the plus side, my car is solid as a god damn rock apparently. Chassis flex is for sissies.

Try the corvair center forum. They make me believe that the average number of corvairs owned by corvair owners is five.

I like those wheels! I don't know why I felt compelled to let you know that...but I did.

They do all seem to have more than one. I'm one of the underachievers that only has one Corvair, but I could certainly be talked into a second.

It's a timeless look. If I had white interior, I wouldn't ever think of having it painted because AMERICA.

Hey man, I'll take any compliment I can get. They're actually one of my favorite things about the car...I'm not sure if they're Ansen Sprints or a clone, but who cares? I think they look great on there.

I have an in-law who owns a Corvair with a turbo and he doesn't wanna mess with it anymore and I'm close to asking him if I could "take it off his hands" for him. Sounds like it needs a new carb but was driving fine before he parked it.

Thanks buddy. It'll probably get paint next year, but I'm not happy about it...that's being married for you, haha. I'm absolutely going to find another drivers side door to get painted with the car, so I can swap Ol Blue Paint on there for old time's sake.

Mrs corvair monza refuses to be seen in the colour scheme??
My ex always said if I got a huge big ol lincoln like I wanted she would never ride in it. She said it wasn't practical, which I never understood. Not practical? You could fit about a months worth of groceries in the trunk!!

How the hell is that impractical? You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house...and if the car is a big damn Lincoln, you can barely even tell the difference anyway.

That's breathtaking. I don't care if it's Japanese, a mini truck with t-tops and an exterior mounted, rear facing back seat is as American as Elvis Presley, baseball, and giant fake boobs.

Do it! Oppo needs more Corvair. Any idea if it's an EM or LM (first or second gen)? A turbo 65 or 66 with the independent rear suspension is a mean little bastard at auto-x or a winding road. The early cars handle well too, but my '69 is probably the flattest cornering car I've ever owned, even more so than my '88 IROC with subframe connectors.

That's the one to have. If it's a 66 you've got 180hp and 265 ft lbs of torque. It's a Corsa, so it's got a full gauge package (Monzas like mine would make due with a speedometer and idiot lights, plus fuel gauge), probably a 4 speed manual, 3 speeds were rare. Mine was originally a 140 non-turbo, currently a 102. The upside of only having 102hp though is I can drive 10/10 basically anywhere, Hana.
